Tuchel to Managing Madrid: “It was the first time we played with Davies as a winger”

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel talked to the press immediately after Real Madrid’s win over the German club. Tuchel was furious with the referee but also polite and analytic when asked by Managing Madrid about Serge Gnabry’s injury and its impact in the game.

“If you look a bit deeper, this was the first match where Gnabry played as a left winger for us. There’s no Kingsley Coman, Serge comes from an injury, so there are no wingers left. Sane just played through a lot of pain and Harry Kane had back problems. Jamal [Musiala] was dead after being injured for the last few weeks. It’s a bit too much because you want to have the chance to have competition for the starting spot and then make substitutions later in the game and this way you can only react to injuries. You also want to have Coman available so that he can make an impact on both wings. Alphonso did an excellent job, he scored the goal and he defended on a high position because of Carvajal. We caught them in a counterattack, so everything was fine. In general this is nothing against the players who played, it’s more about wanting to make substitutions to make an impact and make the difference instead of reacting to injuries, and this was the case today,” he said.
