sensex news: Sensex, Nifty off to a muted start as Street awaits US inflation print

Indian benchmark equity indices opened marginally higher on Wednesday, extending the week’s gains, as investors await U.S. inflation print for possible rate cut clues.

The BSE Sensex was trading 94 points or 0.13% higher at 73,198. Nifty50 was trading at 22,261, up 44 points or 0.2% at around 9.21 am.

From the Sensex stocks, NTPC, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, Power Grid, SBI, and Tata Motors started the day on a positive note, while HDFC Bank, JSW Steel, M&M, Asian Paints, and Sun Pharma began with losses.

Among individual stocks, Cipla opened 5% higher amid reports that the promoter group of India’s third-largest drugmaker sold a 2.53% stake via a block deal.

Siemens shares also opened 9% higher as the Board of the company has approved a scheme of arrangement, under which the energy business will be demerged into a separate listed company.In terms of sectors, Nifty PSU Bank saw a 1.6% increase, with Canara Bank leading the gains following its inclusion in the emerging markets index. Additionally, Nifty Metal, Pharma, Realty, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, and IT sectors also opened higher.Meanwhile, investors are keeping an eye out for key U.S. inflation data, due after the closing bell, for possible rate cut clues.
