Champions League match day two saw Real Madrid travel to France to face Lille, with Endrick getting an opportunity from the start. Eduardo Camavinga returned to the line-up, joined by Andriy Lunin in goal. The rest of the team looked familiar, with the bench containing star names such as Luka Modrić and the rested Kylian Mbappé. Dani Carvajal captained Real Madrid.
Vinícius Júnior kicked things off for Madrid with a shot that triggered a great save from the keeper. Endrick then joined in with a sharp run before making easier work for the Lille number one. Jonathan David then had the home side’s first opportunity, forcing Andriy Lunin into action to stop a close effort. Lunin then made it two nil in their personal duel, saving another David attempt after a spin. Lille gained a penalty late in the half due to a handball from Eduardo Camavinga, which David then stepped up to score and make it 1-0. Endrick almost saved the half, but his shot fell just wide of the target. Half-time arrived with Madrid 1-0 down in France.
Lille could have gone 2-0 with the first chance of the half, but fortunately the ball flew right past the post. David then came close as the Los Blancos started to show some frustrations. Dani Carvajal could have pulled it back with a headed attempt, but couldn’t hit the target from a good position. Antonio Rüdiger then missed not one, but two decent chances – first with a shot and then a header saved by the keeper. It looked a broken system for the away side. Arda Güler entered the field looking to have an impact, only to escape his man only to fail to find the net from close range. Vinícius Júnior came close in added time, but the match would end in defeat for Real Madrid, with Lille coming out 1-0 victors. What went wrong here?
