Kylian Mbappe starts for France; Camavinga, Tchouameni, Mendy on the bench

Kylian Mbappe will start for France in their opening Euro 2024 match against Austria. The remaining three Real Madrid players — Aurelien Tchouameni, Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga — will all start from the bench.

This puts an end to all speculation about Mbappe’s physical or mental state as he captains his country for the first time in a major competition. It was a doubt that was cleared by Mbappe himself in his press conference on Monday, and he will start alongside Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele in France’s attacking three.

Camavinga and Mendy will be the Real Madrid players that are available off the bench, with Didier Deschamps opting for Adrien Rabiot and Theo Hernandez, respectfully, instead. Tchouameni is also named on the bench, but he will probably get his first minutes in France’s second match of the group stage against The Netherlands, as he works on regaining his match fitness.
