Best place at home to put peace lilies so they bloom prolifically

Peace lilies are among the nation’s favourite decorative plants, cherished for their large white flowers and dark green foliage.

However, many plant enthusiasts face the disappointment of seeing the showy petals fade soon after bringing the plants home, with the flowers often failing to return.

Fortunately, a simple placement trick could help revive these beloved houseplants.

The tip comes from the content creator behind the YouTube channel Sheffield Made Plants, who offers various gardening hacks to fellow green-thumbed enthusiasts.

“Peace lilies look stunning in the shop when they’re in full bloom with those big beautiful white flowers and dark green foliage, and this is why they are such a popular houseplant with so many people,” he told viewers.

“But when they bring the plants home the flowers die back, and they often don’t return, leading people to throw the plant out. I’m on a mission to stop this happening and to save this plant from extinction in your home.”

According to the expert, plant owners must accept that the flowers rarely restore to their former shop-bought glory.

However, there is still hope for encouraging new blooms.

“The secret that the growers don’t want us to know is that the peace lilies we find in the shops are fed a natural plant hormone that forces the plants to bloom,” he revealed.

For those looking to enjoy the flowers again, the gardener recommends placing peace lilies near an east-facing window.

“If you leave this plant two meters away from the window you’re unlikely to have much luck getting the plant to bloom again because giving the plant as much indirect light as possible is one of the main things this plant needs to send out flowers,” he explained.

Ideally, the plant should be positioned so it receives at least six hours of bright indirect light daily.

“For those in the Northern Hemisphere, I find that placing the plant next to an east-facing window, where it gets three to four hours of direct morning sun, is the best place for it,” he added.

This position maximises the light the plant receives, allowing it to effectively photosynthesise and store energy for flowering.

In situations where natural light is scarce, growing lights are a viable alternative to ensure the plant gets enough light.

Peace lily owners should also be mindful of the plant’s watering needs.

The plants are quite thirsty, particularly when moisture levels in the air are low.

To counteract the effects of a dry environment, weekly watering during the spring and summer is generally necessary.
